On the Priorean temporal logic with 'around now' over the real line
نویسنده
چکیده
We consider the temporal language with the Priorean operators G and H expressing that a formula is true at all future times and all past times, plus an operator 2 expressing that a formula is true throughout some open interval containing the evaluation time (i.e., it is true ‘around now’). We show that the logic of time based on the real numbers in this language is finitely axiomatisable, answering an implicit question of Shehtman (1993). We also show that the logic has PSPACE-complete complexity, but is not Kripke complete and has no strongly complete axiomatisation.

From Linear to Branching-Time Temporal Logics: Transfer of Semantics and Definability
This paper investigates logical aspects of combining linear orders as semantics for modal and temporal logics, with modalities for possible paths, resulting in a variety of branching time logics over classes of trees. Here we adopt a unified approach to the Priorean, Peircean and Ockhamist semantics for branching time logics, by considering them all as fragments of the latter, obtained as combi...
متن کاملThe Semantics of Tense and Aspect
The present chapter describes a range of formal semantic accounts of tense 10438 and aspect, constituting a modest portion of the vast literature on tense and 10439 aspect (e.g., Binnick, 2012; Mani et al., 2005). The focus is on the nature of 10440 the ingredients assumed, including the pairs w, t of possible worlds w 10441 and moments t of time in Montague (1973), expansions of the moments ...
متن کاملContextual Validity in Hybrid Logic
Hybrid tense logic is an extension of Priorean tense logic in which it is possible to refer to times using special propositional symbols called nominals. Temporal indexicals are expressions such as now, yesterday, today, tomorrow and four days ago that have highly contextdependent interpretations. Moreover, such indexicals give rise to a special kind of validity—contextual validity—that interac...
متن کاملA Formalization of Objective and Subjective Time Ontologies
This paper presents a novel formalization of temporal notions and their classification. First, objective and subjective time perceptions are discussed from a philosophical and logical viewpoint. Then, all objective and subjective temporal concept types are identified, based on McTaggart’s Aand B-series and Priorean tense logic, to which temporal events (or propositions) could be mapped. Time on...
متن کاملExpressiveness of Metric Modalities for Continuous Time
We prove a conjecture by A. Pnueli and strengthen it showing a sequence of “counting modalities” none of which is expressible in the temporal logic generated by the previous modalities, over the real line, or over the positive reals. Moreover, there is no finite temporal logic that can express all of them over the real line, so that no finite metric temporal logic is expressively complete.
